Christmas Holiday!

We hope you had a wonderful holiday!  After a short break, we are all rejuvenated and ready to begin again.  We missed seeing the children every day and are glad to be back in our routine.

Christmas Program

Our Christmas program was spectacular!  The preschool, kindergarten, and elementary children loved learning all the songs and performing them for parents, relatives, and friends.  There is nothing better than watching our children perform on stage!

Christmas Bake Sale

The elementary class made just over $400 on the bake sale.  They had such fun baking all the items for the sale.  Thank you for supporting the work of our children.  Many thanks to all the parents contributing time, effort, and money to help make this event successful.  The children get a wonderful sense of accomplishment in creating the baked goods and then selling them.  What a wonderful group of supportive parents we have at our school!

Tuition Tax Credit

January is the perfect time to start planning for your 2008 tuition tax credit.  By Arizona law, a married couple may assign $1000 of their state tax to a private school tuition fund.  This is only $83.33 per month.  If you lower your state withholding by $83.33 each month and automatically (by direct deposit, check, or credit card) send that amount to the Arizona Scholarship Fund in the name of Sunrise Montessori School, there will be no difference in your take home pay.  Tuition tax credits allow our school to supplement the tuition of several elementary and kindergarten students.

Thanks to all of the parents who participated in the year-end drive to increase tax credit funds to Sunrise Montessori.  If you would like more specific information, please contact the school office or go to the website www.azscholarships.org.

·         bring in empty cartridges to school

·         ask your employer to sponsor the school by saving their empty cartridges

Thanks for recycling!

Westside Food Bank

Thank you for your generous contributions to the West Side Food Bank!  We were able to deliver many food items.  The food bank can always use our donations throughout the year – they give out over 2 million pounds of food each month!

Extra Underclothes

Please check at home and see if your son or daughter has worn extra underwear home from school.  If you find some that belong to the school, please send them back.  We are also requesting extra underwear and clothing for boys and girls to have on hand here at school in case of accidents.

Jackets and Sweaters

Please!  Please!!  Please!!!
Please put your child’s name in their jackets and sweaters.  It is very confusing for the children and the staff when they are trying to find a jacket or sweater and cannot find it because there are no names in them.

Please do not send umbrellas to school!  The children do not get a chance to actually use them and then they are forgotten and left behind at school.

Winter Clothes

Please remember to send in extra clothes for winter in a zip lock baggie (and with your child’s name on the bag and the clothes).  Thanks!

Cares and Concerns

Please keep the Bauman family in your prayers.  Camryn’s daddy has been hospitalized with a serious illness.

Please keep Leisa Medrano in your prayers.  Her father passed away just before Christmas.

Upcoming Events

Spring Carnival and Open House

Coming in March is our annual Spring Carnival and Open House.  The PSG puts on the carnival, a wonderful event for children of all ages.  It takes support from every parent to ensure that the children have a wonderful experience.  Please contact Angie Casey at drtom401@cox.net to volunteer to help.

Pancake Breakfast

Coming on April 19th is the annual pancake breakfast!  The elementary students cook breakfast and read stories to raise money for their classroom.

Sick Children

Children must stay home for 24 hours after a fever subsides.  If your child is sent home with a fever one day, they cannot return to school the next day.  The fever must be gone for 24 hours before your child returns to school.  This helps ensure a healthy staff as well as healthy children.  Thank you for your cooperation.

5 Tips to Keep You Cold Free

Sure, kids are germ magnets.  But you need not catch a cold every time your child is knee-deep in tissues.  Try these avoid-the-sniffles strategies.

1.         Be sure family members wash their hands often and keep their fingers away from eyes and noses – colds travel quickest through touch, says Harold Oster, M.D., infection specialist at San Diego’s Scripps Clinic.

2.        Wipe down your child’s headboard and bedside table once a day with disinfectant.  Viruses can survive on hard surfaces for up to three days.

3.        Drink eight eight-ounce glasses of fluid daily and be sure to follow a nutritious diet.  Both will bolster the immune system, says Flor Munoz, M.D. of Houston’s Baylor College of Medicine.

4.        Try Echinacea.  Studies show it may boost your ability to fight colds by up to 20 percent.

5.        Take a brisk walk daily.  Even 20 minutes will rev up your body’s defenses.

Runny Noses and Colds

If your child has thick green or yellow mucous, it means they have an infection and cannot attend school.  Please keep your children home from school if they have this thick green or yellow mucous.  This should necessitate a visit to the doctor to get whatever remedies are available.

Immunizations

Immunization clinics hosted by the Maricopa County Department of Public Health will be held at Arrowhead Mall the second Monday of each month from

12 PM to 6 PM.

A Word about the Flu

Arizona is experiencing a significant increase in utilization of health care services over the past few days.  This may be impacted by Arizona’s experience of influenza activity.  A resource available to assist community members is:  www.azdhs.gov/flu This website has information related to flu shot clinics, comparison information for the symptoms for colds and flu, what people may want to do if they have the flu, and what protection can be implemented to assist in the prevention of the flu.

The Arizona Department of Health recommends:

٭ Keep children home when they show signs of illness, such as fever, cough, diarrhea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and fatigue.

٭ Implement hygiene/cough etiquette by using tissues to cover the nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing and washing hands after sneezing, coughing, or blowing nose.

For further questions about influenza, contact the Arizona Department of Health Services at 602-364-4562
